Welders Train with Virtual Reality
Lincoln Electric launches new VRTEX virtual reality welding training simulators to provide a powerful, cutting-edge solution for training welders faster and more efficiently while driving down material costs. With superior graphics and accurate sounds, the VRAW (Virtual Reality Arc Welding) experience offered by VRTEX simulators transfers seamlessly into real-world, hands-on welding training.

University Announces Welding Metal to Glass Breakthrough
“While the automotive aftermarket is likely to keep using adhesives, repairers might still be fascinated to hear about some new techniques that could someday alter how factories join auto glass.

Heriot-Watt University in the United Kingdom announced earlier this month they had successfully welded glass to metal with an ‘ultrafast laser system.’ The laser fires “very short, picosecond pulses of infrared light in tracks along the materials” to join the dissimilar materials, according to the college.”

New Welding Regulation Added in Canada
“The Mechanical Contractors Association of B.C. (MCABC) would like to see more consultation between government regulatory bodies such as Technical Safety BC (TSBC) as a result of ministerial order changes which have taken the industry by surprise. One such change introduces a new licensed pressure welder contractor’s licence.”

Welding Jobs

Welders Wanted at Puget Sound
“Most working days at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Katherine Lapierre’s view is through a 4-by-2-inch window. Through it, she can guide high-voltage electricity to generate the 3,000 degrees F necessary to melt and fuse metal together, often adding a gas like argon or helium to ensure the molten puddle she’s just created hardens properly. ”

Welder Shares How He Prepared for His Career
“Juan Martinez grew up in Sevier County, and continues to call Southwest Arkansas home. He enrolled in UA Cossatot’s welding program while in high school. After graduating from Horatio High School in 2015, Martinez continued his education at UA Cossatot and earned a technical certificate in welding.

After earning another technical certificate in pipe welding, he began working as a welder for the De Queen and Eastern Railroad, owned by Patriot Rail Company.”

How to Weld Magnetized Pipes
“One common method that I have used on pipelines in the oil and gas industry is to create a magnetic coil with the work lead. I wrap the lead around the pipe three to six times, about half the pipe diameter away from the weld groove on the opposite side from the direction of the arc blow pull. Then I deposit several ¾- to 1-in. tack welds around the weld joint. Using a current in the lower range of what is suggested, I deposit a root pass with a short arc length based on the size and type of my electrode. If I’m still experiencing arc blow, I then try to wrap the work lead in the opposite direction.”

Welding Students Seek Sustainable Careers
“At the conclusion of their 104-hour course, they will have a welding certificate and the opportunity to start working at a manufacturing job earning $14.50 to $15.50 an hour, with  benefits, and the skills to do piece work, which could earn them $1,000 to $3,000 more, instructor Michael Hart said.”

Texas Welding Programs Receive $300,000 Grant
“Veterans Memorial High School and Moody High School received a grant worth nearly $300,000 from the Texas Workforce Commission. The grant is going to purchase new equipment for the schools’ welding programs.”

Students Place High in Women in Welding Competition
“Three Central Lakes College welding students placed in the recent Women in Welding competition in St. Cloud. Chandra Bruno and Kelsey Saba, of Brainerd, and Jolleen Schneider, of Little Falls, all competed in shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten welding and oxy-fuel cutting.”

New Welding Facility Opens in Utah
“Equipped with plasma arc cutters, Union High School seniors Christopher Nolden and Lyciera Williams got the honor of cutting a sheet metal ribbon marking the opening of the Uintah Basin Technical College’s new welding technology building on Thursday.

Unitah Basin Tech President Aaron Weight said it was fitting that students officially open the 13,570-square foot, $4.5 million state-of-the-industry facility because it was built to serve them.”
